Why choose support from an IBCLC?
As new parents you'll have contact with a variety of health professionals from midwives, to health visitors to GPs and more. Many of these professionals will discuss your feeding journey with you, and may provide suggestions or advice regarding this.
It's important to remember when taking advice on your baby's feeding that not all professionals have equal (if any!) specific training in the management of breastfeeding. For some the advice may come from outdated evidence or limited 1-2 day basic breastfeeding courses.
Although breastfeeding is natural, it can be quite complex and there is no one size fits all approach to issues such as low milk supply or slow weight gain.
If you are unsure of the advice you've been given, or you don't feel comfortable with the plan which has been suggested by your health professional seek further support from a breastfeeding specialist like a lactation consultant.
There are also trained breastfeeding counsellors within organisations like the Breastfeeding Network or Association of Breastfeeding Mothers which can provide useful information for you.
